In Pennsylvania, psychologists must be licensed by the State Board of Psychology before they are legally able to practice professionally. The minimum requirement for licensure is a doctoral degree psychology from a program accredited by the APA or the Canadian Psychological Association. While fulfilling the additional requirements for full licensure, those with a doctorate in psychology can practice in supervised setting as a Psychology Resident or Psychology Trainee. The full steps for licensure are detailed below:

Once issued, psychology licenses in Pennsylvania are valid for a two-year period, from December 1 of an odd-numbered year to November 30 of the next odd-numbered year. To qualify for licensure renewal, practicing psychologists must have completed a minimum of 30 contact hours of continuing education in acceptable courses, programs, or activities in the two years prior to filing for renewal.
